Last updated: 23 October 2026 Vala is an app for journaling and reflecting on dreams, for adults. Some of its features are conversations with AI: the questions it asks before reading a dream, exploring a dream afterwards, and dialogue about contemplative traditions. This page describes what those conversations do if someone tells them they are in danger.

In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any hour. Anywhere else, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines for every country. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

It applies when someone writes, in their own words and about themselves, that they are thinking about ending their life, intend to harm themselves, are being harmed, or are in danger right now. It covers every AI conversation in Vala, and a dream or answers someone asks Vala to read. Dreams are full of death, violence and harm as imagery. That is ordinary dream material, and on its own it does not set the protocol off.

• It sets the dream aside and speaks to the person directly, briefly and warmly. • It tells them they deserve support from a person right now, and gives the crisis lines above. • It does not interpret anything or ask about the dream in that reply. • It never describes, encourages or gives information about ways to harm oneself or end one’s life. When a dream reading meets the protocol, the app shows the AI’s message before the reading.

Nobody is notified and nobody is contacted: the response happens inside the conversation. Nothing is reported, and no person reads entries to look for risk. Vala is not an emergency or crisis service, and its AI does not diagnose or treat anyone.

Every reply in these conversations is written by AI, and Vala marks it as such. You are not talking with a person, and the AI is not a therapist or counsellor.
